As part of thinking back and remembering things on the cusp of moving into 2010, I am trying to work out what to put on my iPod and what not. so what follows is a brief look through the best albums I got in the year 200 and a top 3 with some witterings on why i like things you will probably not like!
anyway from 2000, the year Alex Salmond resigned as leader of the SNP(!), and microsoft unleashed the mighty ME.
The Contenders in alphabetical order
using a completely biased methodology of what did I listen to most then, what do I listen to now and think is pretty good and just what rocks my world, the top three are
Smashing Pumpkins – MACHINA/The Machines of God
from my first time hearing Siamese Dream, I really got the Smashing Pumpkins. (says alot about my teenage years, but then albums like “Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness”, were aimed at my teenage self.) MACHINA/The Machines of God is a strong album probably a bit needy, trying to prove that the band could do without D’arcy who had left from the original lineup. as such there are some tremendous songs on this album, It made alot of rock sense to me.
Seek out – “The Everlasting Gaze” or “Try, Try, Try”
At The Drive-In – Relationship Of Command
What an album. the thing is awesome. every song is full of energy, edgy rockiness, which is generous as it is greatness. the album keeps you going, and going, and going, as it propels you along it slap you in the face to keep up. I love it all. it just rocks, what an album. I am in awe of it. (& it still sounds great.)
seek out – “Invalid Litter Dept.” & “Rolodex Propaganda”
Radiohead – Kid A
what can you say, the album which followed up “OK Computer”, an album variously voted the best album ever, and I think some of the songs on this album are better. Every move is natural and sounds wonderful. It’s like Radiohead had signposted that each album was a step on from each other, and this is just where naturally it was all going.
This album is probably my favourite Radiohead album, I don’t think it is as well rounded as OK Computer, but I think it has better songs, and I like that it isn’t as legendary! If you are only buying on album from 2000, I would tell you to buy this one.
seek out – the whole album, you’ll thank me in the long run!
So what was your favourite album of 2000? let me know in the comments!
